How does a single-phase AC induction motor work?
Single-phase AC induction motors need only one single phase to operate. They are commonly used for low power rating applications, domestic as well as industrial uses. This article aims to provide you with an overview of how single-phase motors work.
Parts of single-phase AC induction motor
The main components of single-phase motor are rotor and stator windings. The rotor is a rotating component and the stator windings help to rotate the rotor. The iron laminate mounted inside the rotor is not shown for a better view of the rotor rod.
The winding is divided into two parts: a main winding and an auxiliary winding. The secondary winding is placed perpendicular to the main winding. The capacitor is connected to the auxiliary winding.
Operation of single-phase AC induction motor
To get a better idea of how this works, let's assume that there is only one coil in the primary and secondary winding. Assume that no current flows through the auxiliary winding. The alternating current flowing through the main winding will create a fluctuating magnetic field.
The work of single-phase AC induction motor is simple. Simply place an already rotating rotor in such a magnetic field. You can notice an interesting thing; The rotor will continue to spin in the same direction.
